Twilight sharpened as I put my hood up and walked into townnAll the streets were empty, like my stomach,nSo I had to see what I could scroungenJust like....nEvery town before.nn'Knock Knock' at every door, no answernI snuck up to their windows for a peaknInside each house I saw silhouettes against the blue lights of their television screensnAnd so I clibmed the hill where power stations overlooked the townnI found the generators, threw the switch, and shut the whole thing downnI turned to see hundreds of flickering blue lights die in the nightnThe darkness that followed was broken by a single candle lightnnSo I descended into townnThe candle light was multiplying now, and the silent streets were filling up with townspeople, laughing.nI asked a smiling woman if she had something we could eatnShe thanked me for the great idea, and dashed to her home down the streetnShe soon returned, her arms full with a bounty of bread wine and cheesenHer neighbor winked and organzied a group, to bring tables and seatsnnAnd so we all sat down, and I raised a glass of winenAnd declared a toast, to meeting these old friends for the first timenAnd someone played guitarnAnd kids banged pots and pansnAnd we all sang old songsn(The kind that no one can forget)nAnd then we all took turnsnTelling our best talesn(The kind that start out true, but end up taller than 10 whales)nThat's when someone spoke up, and said This here gatheringnIs a neighborhood, the kind I always hoped this town would be!nnRight then the power came back on.nAnd then the man next to me checked his watchnAnd said Thank god, my shows are on!nAnd so they blew their candles outnAnd hurried back to be inside each housenWhere glowing blue lights had come back to reclaim the night.nnThe smoke hung in the air, but everyone had gonenThat was the best I'd get from this town, so I ventured onnNow with my belly full, I walked the empty streetsnBetween the rows of houses who's blue lights lit up my feetnBut much to my surprise, one house stood alonenIt was completely darknSave one candle in the windownnI stopped and then I smiled, but I had no time to rest,nI knew that pretty soon, I'd be hungry again. n
