He was IT, she worked in accounting

His cubicle was down the hall

Sometimes they ran into each other

At the water cooler or the elevator

He knew she blogged on cinema verite

She knew he had a rescue dog

He knew she liked the time before sunrise

For 8 weeks that's as far as they got

Til he summoned the guts and worked up the courage

And invited her out on a date

And while she liked him a lot it was totally awkward

But they made arrangements for saturday

But his subway got stuck and she was about to leave the cafe

It was a total disaster, it was a perfect date

Well by this time his flowers were wilted

And they bumped noses when they tried to hug

He spilled his wine all over the waitress

And a second time when he filled her cup

After the meal they went to the movies

The film had been widely discussed

But there were a lot more sex scenes than one would have thought

Thank god it was dark cause they both blushed

And fiddled with their popcorn and waited for the credits to wane

It was a total disaster, it was a perfect date

After the film they walked down the river

He got shy cause he liked her

Went for a punch line and poorly delivered

He knew the joke but he lost his nerve

She kicked herself when she couldnt stop talking

About the meaning of meaninglessness

He nodded yes although she had lost him

Stepped on her foot as he gave her a kiss

And maybe they werent a vision of grace

But there was something between them that showed

And if you'd seen them that day, you would have picked up

On the inception of love and you would have known

That they couldnt mess it up cause it plainly was the work of fate

It was a total disaster, it was a perfect date

And maybe her cardigan didnt get the memo that the eighties had been over for a while maybe he fell a little short of cassanova but he paid her compliments and made her smile like two pieces of a puzzle put together from above

There's no earthly way to judge when it comes to the mystery of love
